Are smart locks worth it in NZ?

Smart locks are everywhere now, and for some households they're brilliant. But they're not automatically better than a good deadbolt, and it's worth going in with clear eyes. Here's the honest version.

What "smart lock" actually covers

It's a broad term for a few different things:

  • Keypad locks — a code instead of a key. Simple, no phone needed.
  • Smart deadbolts — unlock by code, app, or sometimes a tag or fingerprint.
  • Retrofit smart locks — fit over your existing deadbolt so you keep the outside look and your normal key.
  • Fully connected locks — talk to your phone and home network for remote access and logs.

The genuine upsides

No more hiding a key under the mat. You can let in a cleaner, guest or tradie with a temporary code and remove it afterwards. You get rid of the "did I lock the door?" anxiety because you can check from your phone. For holiday homes and short-stay rentals, code-based access is a real practical win.

The cons nobody mentions

  • Power. They run on batteries. Most warn you well before they die, but a flat battery on a lock you rely on is a hassle — know the manual backup before you buy.
  • Connectivity. The "smart" features lean on your wifi and the maker's app. If either has a bad day, you want the lock to still work as a plain lock.
  • Price and quality spread. There's a big gap between a solid smart lock and a cheap one. On something guarding your front door, the cheap option is a false economy.
  • Rentals. If you rent, you usually can't just swap the lock — check your agreement and talk to your property manager first.
Security basics still apply

A smart lock on a flimsy door in a soft frame isn't secure just because it's smart. The strength of the door, frame and strike plate matters as much as the lock itself.

Should you get one?

If you value keyless convenience, manage access for others, or run a short-stay property, a good smart lock is well worth it. If you just want your home secure and simple, a quality deadbolt fitted properly may serve you better for less. Either way, professional installation matters — a great lock fitted badly isn't a great lock. We supply and install both as part of our locks and security service, and can give you a straight recommendation for your door.
